DESCRIPTION :

Understanding mechanic, chemical and physical phenomena related to surfaces and interfaces (wear, friction, chemical reactivity, wettability, resistance to fatigue…), for applications in the fields of energy, transport, environment and system reliability (for example low CO2 emission engines).

CONTRIBUTION TO SCIENCE :

Interdisciplinary approach working from the application to fundamental questions. Studies will focus on surface design, texturizing through different processes like ultra-brief laser or mechanical processes.

CONTRIBUTION FOR THE CITIZEN :

Increase the safety of airplane reactors or nuclear power plants ; develop biomedical applications like new generations of prostheses.

CONTRIBUTION TO THE RESEARCH SYSTEM :

Contribute to science and engineering teaching at all levels (L-M-D) in the fields of materials science and surface processes. In particular, the project puts forward the creation of an ERASMUS MUNDUS specific master titled “Condensed Matter, Surface and Interface Science and Engineering” designed in partnership with European universities.

CONTRIBUTION TO EDUCATION :

This project takes into account the broad-spectrum of programs available (engineering courses, DUT…) and is open to the world thanks to the project of an Erasmus Mundus master.

CONTRIBUTION TO THE ECONOMY :

Many partners for application of research being led with the aeronautic, electronic, and transport industries (Alcan-Rio Tinto, AREVA, SNECMA, STmicroelectronics, SNCF, RATP…)

Network project : Rhône-Alpes Region, Île-de-France, Cities : Saint-Étienne, Andrézieux-Bouthéon, Ecully, Villeurbanne.
