DESCRIPTION :

The project intends to bring together specialists from all fields of acoustics, a science per se inter-disciplinary : solid and fluid mechanics, materials science, signal and image processing, physiology and cognitive psychology. The following three points will be studied : sound sources, propagation, effects on man.

CONTRIBUTION TO SCIENCE :

The project is organized around three scientific axes :
-  The development of new sound sources,
-  The propagation properties of acoustic waves,
-  The use of these acoustic waves in medical applications.

CONTRIBUTION FOR THE CITIZEN :

The impact of this project on the citizen can be found in the health sector with important implications in hearing impairment where miniaturization and increase of prosthesis efficiency will be obtained thanks to advances made by this project, in the therapeutic and imagery fields, where acoustics have an important impact.

CONTRIBUTION TO THE RESEARCH SYSTEM :

The laboratory thus formed will reach critical mass in France, equivalent to that of leaders of the field in Southampton and Stockholm. This will consolidate France’s position in this field with a very important societal impact.

CONTRIBUTION TO EDUCATION :

Relying on existing master’s programs and the strong implication of educative agents, the project aspires to enrich their content, in master’s and engineering programs as well as in doctoral schools. Specific attention will be given to international mobility for students as well as meeting opportunities between students and professionals. Continuous training is the subject of specific developments intended for the diverse public of the field of acoustics.

CONTRIBUTION TO THE ECONOMY :

Considering its economic impact, the health sector, in particular for instrumentation (prosthesis, imagery, probes), is a field where large groups and small businesses that are very interested can be found. Acoustic instrumentation also finds applications in the field of structure characterization in civil, aeronautic, and naval engineering. France has as important industrial base that will be put to good use with this laboratory
