FIELD/SUBJECT : Energy / Surface physics, chemistry, and engineering

LEADING PROJECT PARTNERS : Université de Lyon / Hubert-Curien Laboratory of Saint-Etienne (LaHC), Tribology and System Dynamics Laboratory (LTDS-Ecole Centrale de Lyon), Claude Goux Laboratory (LCG-Ecole des Mines), Diagnostic and industrial process engineering laboratory (DIPI), HEF R&D, Impulsion SAS, Mechanical industry technical center (CETIM)


DOTATION : 4 200 000 €

DESCRIPTION :

This project is made up of a new laser equipment, of an innovating multi-scale surface characterization system, of a 3D characterization tool (characterization of surface materials), which will enable the quickly create model surfaces and characterize them.
CONTRIBUTION TO SCIENCE :

Fields such as fluid mechanics, thermal science, and electromagnetism can make progress thanks to a better understanding of the influence of topography. Indeed, surface topography has a major role in most surface phenomena : influence on wettability, water penetration… Other examples can be found in the fields of fluid mechanics (turbulence effects), thermal science, electromagnetism (reflection or absorption of waves depending on the surface’s texture, even allowing colour rendering), perception engineering (touch sensations depending on topography). It is the collaboration between teams issued from these fields with teams specialized in cutting edge texturizing that will allow for great strides to be made. This project brings together 9 laboratories of the Université de Lyon and its industrial partners.
CONTRIBUTION FOR THE CITIZEN :

Electronic applications like tablets and cell phones with touch screens are in full development. This project will contribute to the development of innovations in this domain.
CONTRIBUTION TO THE RESEARCH SYSTEM :

This facility does not yet exist and no laboratory or business can conceive alone such a system.
CONTRIBUTION TO EDUCATION :

Included in the Univeristé de Lyon’s project, Manutech USD will benefit from training offered by the 9 academic laboratories at Université de Lyon, as well as training offered by grandes écoles participating in the project.
CONTRIBUTION TO THE ECONOMY :

The perspective of high speed texturizing opens up new possibilities for industrial development. The shared engineering effort in the realization of this project will give an immediate boost to the national economy.
