Cargèse, Corsica Island, France / March 22-26, 2010______________________________________________Elementary friction processes still remain an open problem in physics. Friction is usually considered as the energy dissipative mechanism between two solid surfaces moving relative to each other and as work done in generating wear particles. All these phenomena occur at very different length and time scales. The main goal of this school is to give an overview of the current trends in the theoretical description and experimental simulation of dissipative processes in rubbing interfaces over a continuum spectra of scales, from single to multi-asperity contacts. Gathering different disciplines such as physics, chemistry, surface and materials science, this school will help to develop a fundamental understanding of energy dissipation in tribology, which allows us to properly relate the atomistic processes with the macroscopically observed phenomena.
